Default Bald Mountain, Feb 16, 2015

When you look towards Mt Baker from Vedder Mtn, Bald Mtn shows up as a prominent subalpine peak directly in line with Baker. It is 1 of a hundred+ peaks within or on the boundary of the Chilliwack watershed. One of my mountaineering goals is to climb every peak within those boundaries. So the peaks that remain are mtns that are remote, or secondary or just plain unimportant. Remoteness is occasionally just a factor of the unknown, and this was the case for Bald Mountain.

I had attempted Bald on 2 other occasions, once bogged down in deep April snow(15 years ago) and once(7 years ago) stopped by a road washout. This winter has developed superb conditions and I was able to drive to the 4000' level. Bald is accessed via Canyon Crk Rd off the Mt Baker Hgwy. Twelve kilometers up the rd and a left at the bridge which crosses Canyon Creek. From there 7.8k to parking and then a 1.5 hour hike to the 5400'+ mostly snow free summit. Trail less steep forest and moderate scrambling(class2) up a steep open slope complete the route to this great viewpoint.

Church, Bear Paw, Tomyhoi, the Border Peaks and Baker are all prominent from this vantage. Looking north Isar Mtn presents a broad wooded face with a myriad of logging roads. Isar was also a peak I wanted to get up, perhaps that could happen tomorrow!

My whole Coin Peak report disappeared overnight. Reported to VS Jeff and I did find a cached version on Google.
