Default Back of Nak + break-in at Falls Lake exit

Back of Nak + break-in at Falls Lake exit
Sunday, 6 April 2014

The plan was to ski Bombtram but when we arrived at Box Canyaon it was raining, +3°C and low visibility. A decision was made to drive higher and closer to Merritt, which unlike Hope had a forecast for sun all day.

Parked at Falls Lake exit and made our way to the col between Nak and Thar in low visibility and decent snowfall (S1). Could not see much of the backside so opted for a short run off Thar. At the bottom of the run a small avy (S0.5 10 cm, 30 m wide crown running about 30 m, soft slab running on crust, skier triggered but nobody was caught). Did not increase our confidence in SE-S-SW aspects so we trudged over the col to the N side of Nak. Improved vis there, and moist but crust free snow and better stability. Did two laps.

The forecasted sucker holes did not materialize but we did get a quick glimpse of cornice failure off the ridge between Yak and Zopkios. 50-70 m wide, it triggered Size 2 avy that ran for about 200 m.

Skied out via Falls Lake.

Nasty surprise at the trailhead. Somebody broke into the Jeep. Nothing valuable taken: change of clothes, old runners, ski boot bag, house keys and my precious $30 posidrive. Stopped at the next two exits to see if anything was discarded but no luck.

I hope max karma points have been deducted from the thief.
Take care of your valuables and hope for the best.

That sucks! If your address was on anything (car regn?), house keys might be a problem.

I was up zoa that day. north side was good skiing so were the trees back down. no snow issues. we heard 2 cars were broken into but ours wasn't touched.

odd to have mid day break ins at trail heads. normally they are overnight.

Weird, sad to know that you were the victim. Disgusting these low-lifers can impact the enjoyment of one's trip.

guntis: No address or ID attached but being paranoid I changed the locks anyway. Just in case the thief lurks around here. It might be good idea to keep plans of overnight trips somewhat vague, they are probably just opportunist but one never knows.

smac: The skiing was good on N side just not as good as the previous trip to Patterson (dry powder, sun!)

KARVITK: It is funny if I lost the stuff I'd be sad, since it was taken from me I am mad. Still have not gotten over the posidrive
