Today a group of 5 consisting of Mark, Ron, Karl, Nikki and me headed up to Crossover Peak near Mount Slesse out Chilliwack lake road.
The Nesakwatch FSR was in decent shape when we arrived there shortly after 6am..soon enough we were crossing the river on logs and starting our long ascent to the ridge/peak up through the steep forest.
I think it must have been 6 hours or so by the time we got to the final crux/summer ascent route for Crossover.
Once we were there, Mark quickly found his way up there after trying the vertical route first and coming to the conclusion that there was an easier way by following a bench to the right...I tried the bench too but didn't get a warm fuzzy feeling so I focused on the vertical climb instead. I almost convinced myself that I couldn't do it but in my final try I ended up getting into the swing of things and found some holds.
The others stayed below and decided to head back to our lunch spot where our gear was waiting. No warm fuzzy feelings to be had there either I guess.
Mark and I continued climbing big blocks, skirting on little ledges and eventually found a notch right below the summit. This looks good! We climbed up and had the biggest smiles on our faces because we had made it...our last attempt was in October last year in this area.
I used Mark's rope to back climb the vertical bit back down to the steep snow while Mark rap'd himself down..
We made a quick return to meet up with the others down below by digging our crampons into the soft (now slushy) snow while almost running back. The scenery in this area is absolutely stellar!!
We all posed for some pictures in front of Karl's carefully positioned camera, had some snacks and headed back to the truck.
When I checked my watch as we pulled back into Chilliwack it was around 6:47pm..we had been in 'adventure mode' since 5:30am
Here are some shots from the day!
Thank you Karl, Mark, Nikki and Ron for being such great sports and for sharing another adventure in the mountains..
