Default Needle-Flatiron Col (Evening Photo Trip) Aug.24/12

Dean and I discussed about getting out to for some evening photography; his truck was not available and so checked our options for access by car. Seemed the Needle - Flat Iron Area
presented a good op ... despite it being a long drive.

So I picked up Dean from near his house shortly after 5:30 pm and headed for the Coq. Made it there under just an hour to the parking lot, just one other vehicle there. We met a lady and her dog coming down.

We geared up and ready to hit the trail and hiked up at a good pace, making a number of stops to get some shots; idea was to find anything of interest.

6:45 p.m. at the parking Lot: Yak across and Needle Above:

20 minutes later we got the first open view..after the steep section.

The horizontal lighting from the setting sun gave an additonal accent to the scenery:

The gnarly and stunted trees stood out as the low sun cast lots of shadows..

Unfortunately someone had sawed down a group of them for firewood at one location.

Almost the last light: - gnarly old pine and Dean standing on the rock ridge.

The sun sets at 8:02 pm....disappears below the horizon.Hurry onto the col about 8:05 pm..
Then the wait as we watch the sky changes colour..

Check out the moon...

Getting darker, about 9:35 pm we call it a night, and head down with our headlamps, taking exactly one hour to reach the car, with a little careful stepping to ensure we did not slip off the wrong trail. GPS shows we gained 620 meters for elevation gain to 1820 meter level over 3.6 km..

Thank you Dean for the company and inspiration.

K

Hiking is what keeps you young of mind and heart. When the going gets tough, the tough get going..............

Ooooh! Nice! Dusk is such a special time to sit and relax. The animals change over their shifts then, the night winds beat down the sun's work for the day, Then, comes that time when it glows and the heavens seem to meet the earth. I walk gingerly for then is when the snakes come out, down here. I've walked during the blazing day up a trail and came back through snake infested brush at dusk. Ran out of coffee right now. So, tried a cup of tea with coffee Vanilla bean creamer in it and it tastes like playdoh....yuck. I guess that's why it's called 'coffee' creamer. [V] What a beautiful way to escape the busy city and be so close to solitude. In Phillie, I had to drive for a long looooong time to be alone. Everywhere was private land, too. You all have such an amazing resource at your fingertips.
wow!!

Good times Karl, after work hikes always seem so rushed. Great photo set. I just finished mine.

Gerry

Thank you for your outstanding comments,

Dean.
Yes, those after work hikes with shortening days are getting rushed...

But we did pack in some fine photography, great photos in Flickr as usual.

Looks like a great evening with the sunset Karl. One of my favourite spots to take it in.

Yes great pictures. Love the one with the moon off in the distance. Went up there the next day and it was absolutely beautiful.
