Slesse Memorial ~ May 26, 2012
Stu and I were intending on heading up to the Propeller Cairn 6km past the memorial on Slesse trail but I got spooked by the wet mushy deep snow 3/4 of the way up the blueberry patch about 2.5 km past the memorial so we turned back. The snow was one to two meters deep on this slope and the higher we got the wetter the snow was. It could have been safe enough but I decided that even the slightest chance of piles of wet cement like snow sliding down the mountain on top of me wasn't worth making it to our destination.
Stu didn't mind turning back because the going wasn't easy to this point. A lot of post holing and alders to climb over and under. We were happy to see the wee bridge is still operational, although the creek was up considerably and we had to walk the log the full length.
We have a break at Slesse Memorial, the snow was stable and the views devine.
We hike up the trail which affords great views because most of the alders are covered in snow. I love this old FSR at this time of year!
Here's a picture of Stu on the blueberry slope where I ask if we could turn back because of how wet the snow is underneath.
I'm not sure why this east facing slope was saturated while the rest of the snow thus far was consolidated. I guess you just never know what you're going to get in the mountains in the spring.

Great trip up there, and nice shot of you both. Strange how the snow is; snow is well consolidated wherever we went. You never know where one postholes; usually close to a small tree or bush which has interior snow cavities.

Yet another day in paradise. The road is driveable, albeit quite bumpy to the trailhead

Nice report and pics, thanks for the update! It's a good enough grunt up there when there is no snow, I doubt I will ever go up there in the snowy season there.
