Default Corrie Peak, Sep 24 2011

Yesterday, I joined a group leading my friend Alex to Corrie Peak.
Here is some information about Corrie peak from bivouac.com
=================================================
Corrie Peak Designated (Corrie Ridge) Height: 2263 m (7425 ft)
Location: (5 km NE of Garibaldi Lake). (16 km S of Whistler).
Corrie Peak - Southeast Side
On governments maps, this peak is mislabeled to the lower northeast summit. The summit should be at the highpoint of Corrie Ridge which is on the west side Castle Towers Creek. The summit is an easy ascent from Gentian Ridge at the head of the Helm Glacier. This ridge is accessed via the Helm Creek trail to the toe of the Helm Glacier. Hike up to the southeast end of the Helm Glacier and on to Gentian Ridge. Drop down to the col with Corrie Peak and scramble up the south ridge to reach the summit.
Name Notes: Like several other peaks in this area (Black Tusk and Gentian Peak), Corrie peak is named after a geographic feature. A "corrie" is a hollow on the side of a mountain, carved out by glacial action. The word is an anglicization of the Gaelic word "coire" meaning hollow. In Wales it is known as a cwm (from Welsh for valley).
Corrie Peak from Gentian Ridge Class 2, off trail travel. From Gentian Ridge high point (Fuscian Peak) head a little more southward and down. Drop off the ridgeline on talus and cross the small Corrie Glacier before gaining the ridge running southwest of Corrie. Follow up to summit.
================================================

We set off for the Helm Creek trail at 8:20 AM. Knowing that we were a little bit late to start we set a good pace. In two hours we stopped for a quick snack break at the Helm Creek campsite. Then we headed up toward the head of the Helm Glacier. We decided to take the Helm Glacier route instead of the Gentian Ridge approach. Even the glacier route is a little bit longer, but it's much more gradual and gentle to ascend. We didn't want to ramble and do all these Ups and DOWNs over the talus of Gentian Ridge. We stopped again for a water break at the head of the glacier. We gained Gentian Ridge at the point south of Fuscian Peak (the highest point of Gentian Ridge). When we gained the ridge we were able to see our objective – Corrie Peak for the first time. Over the talus we dropped down of the ridge and then we crossed the small Corrie Glacier to get to the col between Corrie Peak and Gentian Ridge. Very strong winds welcomed us at the col. The gale was so strong so it knocked me out of my balance a few times during the Corrie's ascent. Finally, after 5 hours and 30 minutes we reached the summit. Corrie's summit is a wonderful view point. There were nice views in all direction. From the summit we could see both big lakes – Garibaldi and Cheakmus. There were perfect views all mountains around – Gastle Towers, Garibaldi, Tantalus Range, Chimai, Ashlu, Matier massif, Wedge, Fissile, Overlord and many mores. In spite of the strong winds we spent more than an hour at the summit taking pictures. Then we went down. We chose a slightly different route on our way back. We decided to stay on the ridge instead of going through the Corrie glacier again. Rambling through the Corrie Ridge we enjoyed fantastic views of Castle Towers. Then we descended across the Helm Glacier again and stopped for the last water break at the Helm Creek campsite. We were back at the cars just before it got dark. It was a nice 11 hour and 31KM round trip with more than 2000m elevation gain in total.
Here are some pictures from the trip.

Most of you were travelling too fast to say hello, but I recognized Alex in the parking lot. Our best effort was Helm Lake. Congrats on the peak baggery.

Very beautiful area and this peak offers up splendide views of it's better known neighbours.

I'd be interested to know how many peaks Alex Best has done this year. He organizes a lot of trips[^].
