Thank you for this detailed report, it's exactly what I was looking for! The hiking/backcountry community enriched by all the information shared between us, and you have done a spectacular job.

Yes, I'm glad this TR got bumped, or I would have missed it.. Good to read one from my neck of the woods.

Default Kakwa update - 2016

It is now 2016 and I had the good fortune to get back to Kakwa this summer for the first time since my original trip in 2010. The Walker FSR was certainly reinforced at kilometre 33 where the previous washout was. The rest of the road is in decent shape. There are a lot of potholes for the first 20 km and some larger sinkholes in the final 10 kilometres (I think these are old wooden culverts). It is passable in a car with some clearance, but a truck is preferable.

John Vogt continues to make it up there most summers, and was there for almost a month this summer. His website remains an invaluable resource. He has continued to expand the hiking guide and you could easily spend a week up there doing day trips and/or multi-day loops.

http://www.kakwa.jjv.ca/index.html

Joel, Sandy, Conor and I took four days over the September long weekend to go to Kakwa. It still takes a day to get there from Prince George. We then did a nice two day loop to Jarvis Lake. It is about 10 km along the Tote Road and then about 10 km along the trail to get to the cabin on Jarvis. Despite a lot of cloud and a bit of rain we were treated to some rather spectacular views of Mt Ida, the northernmost 10,000 + foot peak in the Rockies. The cabin at Jarvis was in good shape. We bushwhacked up to Moon Valley and then scrambled up Corniche Pass (steep but accessible from that direction), descended down to Babette Lake and then back to the cabin .

It would be a great loop to access Edgegrain Lake from Flat Top mountain and then loop around to the Jarvis Lake cabin. Three days minimum for that loop! Hopefully we'll be able to get back there in the near future. Kakwa retains a wild allure that I know has gotten under the skin of a few locals who have been back many, many times!

As the northern terminus of the Great Divide Trail, Kakwa Lake is in our travel plans for next year.

excellent to see the thread bumped. What a beautiful place. Many thanks for all the superb information.

We've never been but reminds of the Northern Rocky Mountains park, epic and so off the usual track.

Default Going here in a few weeks!

I have been scouting this park for a few months. That V shaped valley from the original poster was hiked by myself and a friend

Here is the photo shoot:

Will be spending a week here in August 2021 and will post more recent info!

This park is so remote and wild having so much to offer for many years of hiking and discovery!
