That would work for larger vehicles but we're trying to keep dirtbikes and atvs out.

They'd just run though the poles.

They type of gate we're talking about is sideways "U" and "T" shaped (looking down on it) so while foot traffic can get through mv traffic will not be able to.

Perhaps the simplest solution would be some well placed dynamite on the road up. Cheam would then be reserved for those who are willing to punish the body a bit to enjoy the reward. However, I guess that would also put it out of range for many of the sixty or so people Mo and I passed on the way down...
