Default Trail Crew for Golden Ears

The RMOC trail volunteer crew is seeking new members. We need to train local successors, as we are aging, to carry on the trail stewardship on the Golden Ears Backcountry Trails.

You do not have to join the club, nor do you have to work every session - even a couple days per year would be a great help.

Current project is clearing the regular Alouette Mt Trail from the top of the Beautiful-Alouette Connector to the summit. This may take 4 Saturdays, depending on how much help can be mustered. 1st meet-up is at the Incline Trailhead at 7:50 a.m. on June 18. You will need work grade clothing, especially work gloves, appropriate for a long day and the weather. Tools will be supplied.

If you have a Saturday or a Wednesday in mind for when you can help us, contact me on this topic or through my CT email.
Happy Trails.

Hmmm, not having much luck here. From past posts, I know there are hundreds of hikers browsing this site who live close-by and enjoy the Golden Ears backcountry recreation area. Was I wrong in thinking there must be at least a handful willing to help keep these trails viable?

The GE backcountry trails are user maintained. In 2008, when RMOC started the current maintenance plan, sections of every trail were overgrown - remember? We picked 51k of the 60k network to directly manage. By 2012, the trails we chose were all cleared, and we were repeating our 2-3-year clearing cycle. In spite of a few record breaking storm-fall events, all the fallen trees were cleared or trails rerouted. Cross ditches were cleaned, over 1000 trail markers and some signs were hung - there is less mud now and it is tougher to get lost.

The RMOC team is getting older, and right now, we can only muster 1 to 5 person crews to work beyond 6k from the trailheads. Before long, we will be done with this job altogether. The GE trails need you to eventually take over the maintenance - there is nobody else. Remember that with a large volunteer pool, the work load is spread out, so only a few days per year is required from most people. With more workers we could manage all 60 k and even make them better. So far, we have only a 4 person crew for this Saturday. Please come out to help us.

@alhike - I'd suggest getting in touch with organizers of trail running races that are held in the park (5-Peaks series and possibly others). As users of the trails, they have a bit of an obligation to help and frequently, runners must fulfill a certain number of community service/trail building hours to qualify for entry in big events so are actively looking for opportunities. That's how we pull together work crews in Squamish. PM me if you'd like to chat more.
