Default AfterWorkHike - June 4 (McGuire NW Ridge)

AfterWorkHike series - Tuesday June 4, 2013 Mount McGuire NW Ridge

HIKE DESTINATION: Mount McGuire NW Ridge
MEET AT: Starbucks Cottonwood Mall, Chilliwack
TIME/DATE: 5:00pm / June 4, 2013

PLAN: The plan is to meet at the starbucks at cottonwood mall at 5pm and quickly head out and up the mountain.
Once we get as far as we can up the road by driving we will start hiking up the road. When we take our final left branch on the road which should be snow covered still, we will quickly gain the ridge and climb up as far as time permits. If we can walk the ridge most of the way there are fantastic 360 views to catch the setting sun over chilliwack and the cascades. Some views include the Border Peaks, Mount Tomyhoi, Baker, McGuire, etc..

The hike will probably be 5km return and with photos and breaks should take us a few hrs.

GEAR: I you have crampons/microspikes & ice axe, bring them. To get up onto the ridge there is a short but steep section.. We usually just kick steps and use axes to back climb but the added grip of crampons is worth the security for that section and the ridge if you are not use to doing this.

If you have snowshoes, bring those too..you just never know how much post holing we could encounter this time of year. We should be fine but this is just one of those things...better to have it to enjoy hike instead of sinking every step.

Gloves, warm clothes, snacks, water, headlamp all essential.

Cheers,
Kelly

I suggest bring along crampons and night light, snowshoes might not be needed. I am seriously looking at this one, but my nightis not as strong as I like.

I will have to take a pass on this one; I dont have all the equipment needed for this hike. However I would like to get out Wed or Thurs after work if anyone wants to do another hike. Kelly has my contact information.
