Default Mt Outram, Sunday, August 24th

This front country trail is open as of Aug 23.

Return Distance: 18kms
Summit Elevation: 2440 m
Elevation Gain: 1760m
Trailhead Departure: 8:30am
Total trail time: 8hrs (brisk pace)

Meeting Time: 6:45 am
Departure Time: 7 am Precisely
Meeting Place: Coquitlam Town Ctr (Southwest Corner of parking lot, at Johnson & Barnet - near The Bay)
Additional meeting locations: Jim Hamlin's Place in Langley
Additional meeting locations: Trailhead: 8:30am

"Outram is the highest Cascade summit north of Highway 3. This high summit dominates the Manning Park area of the Cascades. Composed of generally mediocre rock, Outram looms above the west gates of Manning. A popular hiking trail (with quite a lot of elevation gain) climbs the easy south flanks, the true summit is gained from alpine meadows (beautiful flowers in season) via a short scramble. Outram has a steep north face composed of equal portions of loose rock and dirt."

This is a steep trail: shorter than Golden Ears yet 260m greater in elevation gain, without the tree cover protection from the sun.

Dean1150, bring at least 3L of water and a water filter is not a bad idea either 8 of us did the hike from the south end of the beach to Eagles Peak around the lakes to Lindsay Lake to the Swan Falls and down. The only good water source was on our decent down at the side of Swan Falls, Hiking_nut brought a water filter used it at the falls as the lakes were so-so even for a water filter. We were all prepare with 2-3L of water, but the filter was great just in case.

Ooh! buy the way it took us about 10 hrs, and cooling off in Buntzen is highly recommended!
It was a great hike, I would do it again. Check-out some of the CT posts on hike.

Good-Luck
C.B.

Dean, count me in for this. Claire Bear, thanks for the heads-up about water. Looking forward to the hike.

Happy trails.

there are sources of water along the way - a couple of stream crossings past 157 Lookout on the way up to the ridge. Good idea to top up the reservoirs there. It's a beautiful trail, in very good shape, with lots of old logging relics along the way.

It's a long walk on the powerline road, then on the road to Buntzen Bay before you get into the forest, but once inside, it's lovely!

cheers - C Wall

Thank you to Claire Bear & C Wall. I've done the access road too many times. It is certainly long and boring. The last time I went up the trail, I took my Mountain Bike, locked it at the trailhead, and saved about 3 hrs return! Can't do that this time since we're doing the loop. I agree with the water- I'm considering bringing a 25l water cooler jug from work!

Bad News: all the trails at Buntzen are closed. We need a new destination: I'm recommending Mt Outram or Frosty Mountain (with overnight packs, only took 4:15 up and 2:30 down - so would likely be under 6 hrs with daypacks at a good pace).
We need a demanding trail with high elevation gain to get warmed up for Castle Towers later in the week. Outram fits the profile better in that respect.

I'm also leaning toward Outram since it's closer.
Any thoughts from those already on board?
Sorry for the change. The news is hot off the wire.

I'm interested in a dayhike too.

How long does it take to drive from Coquitlam to Mt Outram or Frosty Mountain?

I think the frosty mountain trail is closed as well. You may want to contact Manning park lodge before getting dissapointed. Ed

I checked Mt Outram - it's still open and should be great. I'll change this posting to Mt Outram.

I should be able to make this baby too. I'll need to meet you out CHWK way though. I could meet you by the Tim Horton's just off the Hwy in Sardis at exit 119 and either hitch a ride if there's an opening or drive in myself...anybody else from the CHWK area interested? We could meet there then.
If you guys are meeting in Coq at 07:00, you'd be thru CHWK around 08:00 then.
