Indian Arm Winds
We went up Indian Arm Friday morning and camped at Bishop Creek. Around 4:30 p.m. we spotted a pair in a tandem kayak, in the middle of the arm, paddling valiantly southbound into strong headwinds and waves. Later that evening, around 7 p.m., a motorboat from Deep Cove kayaks came by and asked if we had seen them as they were overdue. We reported what we saw.

Saturday morning, we headed back towards Deep Cove in ideal conditions (outflow tides, calm seas and no wind) and saw them loading up their kayak at Camp Jubilee, (a 45 minute paddle from Deep Cove).

As we were unloading at Deep Cove, they arrived and we spoke to them briefly. They told us that they had rented the kayak from Deep Cove rentals but they said no one had informed them of the prevailing regular afternoon northerly winds.

If you are heading south on Indian Arm, plan to paddle in the early morning or very late afternoon. The winds start around noon. I suggest that people not try to paddle upwind as the waves can be very big and the wind will eat you up.

Second, always stay close to shore. In the event of a capsize, in these cold waters, even wearing a pfd, you will lose the strength to swim or even hold on to the boat in 15-20 min.

Enjoy our beautiful waters and read up on the prevailing conditions and forecast before you go.

a good reminder, boating in good weather does not mean good or safe travel. Many factors to consider.
