Default Considering Great Divide MTB Route-Banff to Mexico

Has anyone on CT done all or part of this route?

We would be interested in hearing about the gear used, the time of year you did it, your logistics, useful links, maps, books, and so forth. So far we have the maps from Adventure Cycling, and the book by Michael McCoy/The Mountaineers.

There is an annual race along this route, but that is not where our interest lies. We'd like to do it as an extended bike tour, probably taking about three months. As such, it would be a cross between a backpacking trip and a bike tour. The "go to" equipment, from what we read, is a full suspension bike with BOB Ibex (Suspension) trailer. http://www.trek4fun.com/

At our advanced age, we've managed to miss (or sidestep?) the mountain bike phase that involves gymnastic North Shore riding, but have done some long-distance touring with rough sections (Pamir Highway,Wakhan Corridor,KVR,more) on sturdy touring bikes. We could ease ourselves into a different mode for this one, but may too late to get organized for this season. Most do this route north to south, and you need to be through the highest part in Colorado before it gets snowed in.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

There is currently a self supported race finishing up along that route.
