Saturday June 20, 2009. Headwall/Fortress/Chester Lake Circuit. Conditions are good with some snow, some mud, some dry land. No problems from col to summit.

Can you tell me where exactly that second picture is taken?

I am 99% certain that is the col between the valley that contains the Headwall Lakes trail and the upper part of the Chester Lake trail, its also the asscent route for The Fortress. Hope that helps.

Since the OP hasn't returned, I'll confirm with above. It's the path coming down from the col on the Chester Lake side of the chester-fortress col.
It's a possible ascent route, but it's a crappy ascent route for The Fortress. The other side is way better if you want to go to Fortress.
Good luck!

Galatea Creek trail to Lilian Lake - June 28:

bit muddy up high, couple snow/ice patches left on trail, but generally the trail is fine.

The north side of Mt. Athabasca has some new snow and no shortage of wind loading. Several groups up on Saturday morning thanks to a very clear and cold night with a good freeze, but without perfect conditions, the ramp route is still looking pretty dicey.

We went to Parker's Ridge today for some snow school, and there is just enough snow for some turns! I was sad we didn't bring our skis.

Went to the saddle above Rawson Lake on Sunday (June 27). There is still lots of snow around the lake and the lake is still mostly frozen. Hiking around the lake was not difficult on supportive snow. The saddle is very beautiful, dotted with thousands of blossoming flowers. Snow can be avoided but we deliberately went up a snow covered gully. The travel their was much faster than on the proper trail and on the way back we quickly ran down on the snow. The view from the saddle toward Kananaskis Lakes was fantastic as always.

Engor,

Did you get a chance to look at Mt. Indefatigable? Does it look to be in shape?

Mt. Indefatigable looks completely snow free

Thanks a lot Engor!!!

BTW, I climbed Eisenhower Tower on Saturday. Great conditions with great views. Those wishing to scramble Castle mountain will be happy to know that it's condition as well.

For anyone who might be interested the Celestine Lake road is scheduled to open on July 31st. I understand that it'll stay open now until it's normal closing in mid Oct.

You're welcome, but I would still check closer to when you are leaving. Parks has flip flopped a zillion times on this issue
