Got pretty lucky on Friday (Aug 20) and found a trail above the smoke. I had zero expectations for the day given the total lack of visibility down at the start of Hwy 40 in the early morning. By the time we arrived at the Chester Lake trailhead, it was pretty clear in all directions, so we headed off up the Headwall Lakes valley. Coming back down Hwy 40 into the smoke again at the end of the day was something else. Mt Kidd is pretty big, but it was doing its best disappearing act from the highway.

Here's an idea of how "normal" things looked up at the Headwall valley compared to on the other side of The Fortress towards Hwy 40.

Six inches of snow and sub-zero (icicles forming) at 1 pm yesterday on Moose Mountain. Despite that I was surprised that ours was the only party to summit - it was only as bad as an average winter's day in Wales, after all!

There's a good dusting of snow on Grotto, Lady Mac, etc. but it'll probably melt off by the weekend.

Unfortunately, if the abundance of snow on the Banded Peak group (sorry Wietse!) is any indicator of the snow on the peaks around Canmore...

Did Tyrwhitt today...a good 6" of snow by the side of the highway, parking and trailhead. This didn't change in the woods and got deeper by Grizzly Col. I was fighting waist-deep snow in places on the final push to the summit. Talk about gruelling and slippery!

Went up to Aster Lake on September 4 with the intent of doing the Northover Ridge the next day. We had good weather with two short rain storms and then woke up on Sept 5, 2010 to about 10cm of snow at Aster Lake.

There was hardly any snow down below at Upper Kananaskis Lake. Just a skiff of really wet snow and the precipitation had changed to a light rain or mist by the time we got down.

Yeah...not happy...will have to do this traverse next year. Did Remus on Saturday, got rained on a little bit but only hard for about 10-15 minutes. Hope it's going to melt of a bit before the weekend...or wax my skis...

Oh, I was hoping to do Tyrwhitt for the Larch this summer. Did summer go by in the couple weeks I've been away, or did we really just go straight from Spring to Winter?
I feel like winter just ended, and I'm still waiting for summer to show..
