My friend is climbing it tomorrow so I'll let you know how it goes.

Some new snow showing up high in the alpine. A very active thunder storm lasting the better part of the morning right to the time I left in the early afternoon today ripping apart Morraine lake, enough so that no one I saw on the trail was heading very high into open terrain and it is currently making it's way through Banff.

I was on the Jacques Lake trail on the 13th. I got 6 kms in to Second Summit lake and wisely turned back as the cold fron hit. The wind was quite strong as I witnessed a couple of trees fall over, luckily off the trail. By the time I got back to my car, it was a whiteout and 3C. Luckily I had rain gear on, but my hands were pretty cold. Lots of bear scat on the trail, so be Bear aware!

This weekend I hope to have better luck, at Shadow Lake/Whistling Pass.

Jacques Lake very wet, but no snow, as of last weekend.

Did Helena Ridge-Stuart Knob-Pulsatilla Mtn-TV Peak (via the Protection Mtn-TV Peak ridge)-Castle Mtn (true summit) on Friday, July 23. There is a surprising amount of snow patches in the plateau between TV Peak and Pulsatilla.

I know of another group who was heading up that way over Friday and Saturday (C.O.C. group) so if anyone else is thinking about visiting the area...take gaiters and an ice axe for self-arresting when bum-glissading.

If I have time and there's any interest, I'll post a photo or two.

Have fun!

St. Piran today. 3 hours car to car as the fricken relentless mosquitos have been released from hells gates and like to gang you when you stop. They are phycotic satan spawn straight from the anus of magma. Don't forget the bug spray like I did.

Eeeks, apologies for the lateness of these photos...in a thread where conditions are the primary focus, I can appreciate the timeliness of posting photos of an area. So, sorry that these are a week late.

1) 2) 3)

1) This is a view looking from Stuart Knob towards Pulsatilla Mtn.
2) Route up Pulsatilla
3) Route to the ridge that joins Protection Mtn (not visible but way off to the right) to TV Peak (left)

As you can see, quite a bit of snow on the plateau!

Enjoy

P.S. Did the Banded Peak group (Mt Glasgow-Mt Cornwall-Outlaw Peak-Banded Peak) yesterday...route is completely free of snow although there is a patch or two off to the side. Had a lousy encounter with mosquitos (time2clmb can relate!) going up Glasgow and Cornwall in particular.

They're still worth cool value, even if not quite up-to-date conditions.
