Stoves ???

I am looking for a good stove for hiking/backpacking and Kyaking?
I am looking at the Primus Himalaya MultiFuel / Himalaya VariFuel and the Omptimus Nova MultiFuel stove. I like the Primus MultiFuel stove because you can use LP gas and liquid fuels.

I usually would be out for a max of only two nights

I am willing to spend around $150 or so

Any other suggestions would be great.

I really like my Optimus Nova. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I've been using my MSR Whisperlite for 7 years without a single problem! (it's the multi-fuel model) And replacement parts (if you need them) are redily available at most gearshops.

I am happy to see someone speak up for the Whisperlite. I've been using mine (a white gas only model) for about 10 years with no problems that I couldn't repair myself -- in the field. And that is saying something because skill at repairing things is NOT one of my strong points. It's a hot little stove that is reliable and works even in the cold.

Personally I like the Coleman Peak 1 (now called excursion) products. Their stoves and lanterns are pretty tough to beat.

Being the proud owner of 17 stoves, I can tell you that the Optimus Nova is the stove I turn to in cold weather. It's well worth the money.

After more looking into it and thinking here is my most recent thoughts...

Primus Yellowstone Techno Trail stove (an LP gas stove) in combination with the Primus Mesh Lantern. Both are light and I can use the Butane/Propane Canister for both cooking and light.

I am a beginner backpacker and Kyaker (never used a hiking stove before) but would like to do overnighters hiking and kyaking during the summer.

Does this sound like a good idea?

Thanks in advance.

Your solution sounds reasonably inexpensive and appropriate for a beginner.

17? As in seventeen?! All different? What are they all? I am totally curious. How did you come to own 17 stoves? There's got to be a story or two here. Do tell.

Hiker Boy 02-18-2003 11:28 PM

They are all unique. Some are over 30 years old and made of brass, some are homemade, some burn solid fuel, some are multi fuel, some I have been purchased brand spanking new, and some have been donated. What I proudly call my stove collection, sadly, my friends mockingly call a fetish.

I don't know who called it that, HB. I just think you're prepared w/ one heck of a kitchen for on the trail!

rerun 02-19-2003 08:23 AM

That conjures a great image -- HB with a ring of stoves roaring around him, pots steaming, pans sizzling, as he whips up a multicourse feast for his hiking pals. So, HB, when did you say you are available for an overnighter?

Outdoorguy 02-19-2003 08:27 AM

I definately think this qualifies HB as the designated camp cook!!
um,...can you take my order now??? <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

rerun, the next winter overnighter is planned for this Sat night. It'll be either Elfin Lakes or Manning.

This appears to be light and effective for me. would I be happy with this stove for overnighters, any negative or positive feedback would be welcome, or should I bit the bullit and get the Primus MultiFuel stove, and maybe buy the lantern separate?

Thanks in advance
