Gear Knolling
 

Years ago the West Coast Trail was my first 'serious' backpacking adventure, which I undertook as a solo trek and without too much gear. In a week I'll be doing the trail again to see how my experience compares with a lighter load. Below is everything I am taking, a total of 42 pounds all in (including food, water, electronics, etc.). Although there is a group of three of us, we are each fully self-sufficient and not sharing tents, etc. The first time I did it I read these online reports indicating how many calories one burns, so had packed 3,000 calories per day. Now I take about 1,600 per day. I started by doing West Coast Trail at 66 pounds (brutal, and almost had me limp into camp at night), then did 8 days on the North Coast Trail, a week on Nootka Island, and others, with always around 50-52 pounds to start. This time I'm starting with 42 pounds, have about 1.75 pounds of consumables per day (food, drink, fuel, toilet paper, campusuds), so am looking to finishing under 30 pounds. Curious to see everyone else's gear stashes. A coworker saw one of my pics and said there's this thing called "knolling", so I decided to play with some gear knelling today :-).

I hadn't heard of the term knolling, but turns out I like it very much and have wanted to do this for some time. Just need to find the space to lay everything out...

No food as I'm not that organized. 3 season (wet and/or cold) solo setup. Dry warm non-muddy trips I could leave lots behind. 19lb pack plus worn gear. Includes 8x10 tarp and ultralight day pack. I'm constantly adjusting gear and don't hesitate to break out the sewing machine, the top pouch on the pack wasn't needed and replacing it saved 110 grams
