Default MEC elections 2015

A childhood friend of mine P. A. is running for the MEC board this year. P. is not a mountaineering guy but is a 'recommended' candidate this year (1 of 4), as screened by the board. I suspect he was made a recommended candidate by the board because of his business background. I would recommend P. to MEC members because in school I knew him to be a whiz-kid with a strong work ethic and an all round good person. In his professional career he has done very well at a relatively young age (40 years old, VP at Best Buy and an adjunct professor at UBC), he is a down to earth guy who has the ability to get along with all types and will not alienate anyone. Having grown up in Quebec he is fluently bilingual as well. MEC could use a guy like Phil but I encourage you to check out all the candidates http://elections.mec.ca/vote/

Is Phil's vision of MEC to sell practical and reasonably priced outdoor gear or fashionable, over-priced high profit urban wear?

I don't think any of the candidates intend to stray too far from MEC's roots.

Here's the challenge:

Amazon, REI, GearXpress, Moosejaw, Lacrodee, backcountry.com, Department of Goods... not to deals direct from the manufacturer (Helly Hansen, BCA). That's my personal list of online merchants that I have bought gear and clothing from over the past few years. I like MEC but there isn't a brick and mortar store in my town so I buy stuff online, as does everyone I know. It's so easy just to hit google and find someplace that is selling something cheaper than anywhere else. MEC has decent pricing and a good website but how do they stay afloat?

I can't answer that... I think despite all the things MEC is doing well they cannot stay complacent and need the best individuals possible on their board.

Over the past few years the MEC board has strayed quite far from their original roots so I'm not sure what to make of your statement.

Fair enough, but change is not always a bad thing.

A good warranty and a good reputation among mountaineers. Selling urban wear does little for your reputation among mountaineers.
