I wouldn't classify the comments as whining.
A number of people had their share redemption end up in the junk mail and so it's reasonable for them to question the reliability of the new distribution system.
Other people are having perfectly valid discussions about the relationship between spending and share redemption. There are many ways a co-op can approach this issue and members can and should have these discussions. It is our co-op after all.
This isn't a "discount." We are owners of MEC and this is our share redemption. It's a very fundamental part of participating in a co-op.
Re: "For all of the whiners, I wish MEC would just give you your $5 back, and be done with you."
I imagine that people who voted for the Federal Conservatives sometimes feel that way about the people who voted for the NDP or the Liberals.
"Can't they just leave our country and quit complaining." ... but that's not how a democracy works.

Wouldn't have noticed my $50 email if it wasn't for this post. Thanks.

tu: if you actually did delete it, as in, absolutely gonzo, contact MEC. I don't know for sure, but they seem to track a lot of things digitally and can probably re-issue it to you.

I don't see wondering as to how these were distributed and how the amounts determined as whining.

50 bones for me - I think I joined up in 1999 or 2000. I've had healthier dividends in the past, but my gear "accumulation" phase peaked in around 2010... I still give MEC a healthy percentage of my annual salary, but not like I used to.
Still happy to receive the redemption (and I saved a few of my buddies after their email filters decided to dump the emails).

I'm one of those people who deleted the e-mail and cleared my junk folder before I even knew about this. Thank to this post I found out about this year's dividends and called MEC. They confirmed that i received something by e-mail, but can't cancel that. However, after June 1 I can contact them again and request them to send me a cheque. My dividend is $25 and I spent $3,169.98 there last year. So, dividend is about 0.79%, but hey, I'll take a MEC gift card any time.

If I was invested in a business, and I didn't like the way things were going, I'd sell my shares and get out. Move on. It's MEC, not berkshire hathaway.

I think if you cancel your account they will pay out your entire shares owed.

Just a follow-up - I'm one of those people who missed the original dividend e-mail, so I had called MEC and they told me to call back after June 1, at which time they could send me a cheque. Well, it seems like I don't even have to wait that long as this morning I received an e-mail from MEC reminding me of the dividen gift card number, serial number, and PIN. E-mail says to just give that number in the store or online. So, for those of you who missed your original e-mails, keep an eye on today's e-mails.

I was in MEC the other day and I noticed that they've changed their preferred colour from forest green to asphalt black.

In the last several years, I spent quite a bit at MEC and I didn't get a penny!
How are they suppose to send it?
I'm on their mailing list for email, but I didn't get it from my email or snail mail.

Heads up, a recent email from MEC arrived with the subject "Your MEC Gift Card" with $50 in it.
I have gotten into the habit of skipping many of the MEC emails because the are for running meets, etc. so I almost missed it.
