Default Stuck Swiss Army knife

The can opener on my knife is stuck.

I have already cleaned the knife, it is not rusty, the can opener blade can be opened but it takes considerable force and a screwdriver. I cannot open it with my fingernail.

I tried the Swiss Army website recommendation to put the knife into warm water, then open the stuck part few times, then oil. It did not work. Googled the problem and there are many suggestions, some of them nonsensical or not trustworthy.

Anybody here has a solution?

maybe try some WD-40, liberally applied, and let it stand for awhile. Perhaps there is a bit of corrosion/food in there which is binding things.

<edit> I seem to remember a knife I had where the screwdriver was that way. I ended up carrying a penny to use as a lever. Has the can opener always been that way?

Give it a soak in rubbing alcohol or other light solvent, then oil it again.
If that doesn't work, stop carrying cans or get a new one. I think it is riveted construction so you can't disassemble it to get the corrosion or hard deposits off the pivot.

The WD-40 did not work, rubbing alcohol did not work but it gave me an idea to soak it in Goof Off. After three soaks the blade is moving easily again. I was looking forward to the coca cola bath though, perhaps next time. Thanks for your help.

I read an article just last week about various commercial penetrants and their effectiveness.
The hands-down winner was a homemade blend of Automatic transmission fluid and acetone.
You could probably omit the acetone for fear of what it might do to the finish...ATF is an "unsung hero" when it comes to un-seizing things.

These guys use vegetable oil and acetone!
