Yet it may be a good idea to always bring 10 essentials.

Or 10 of one essential

Thinking you are seeing, but not seeing. Thinking you know, but not knowing. This spring is full of a lot of such things.

Personaly I find that a packs weight can sky rocket when you enter the realm of "paranoia packing", specificaly in regards to the extra food/water and clothing.

And sun protection? I find it hard to consider sunscreen and sun glasses essential, smart possibly depending on the trip, not essential.

I carry five of these items (1,5,7,8,9) and an orange whistle double bagged in zipplock bags in a tiny little cloth pouch in my pants pocket. My buck knife is right next to it if it isn't on my belt and my headlamp is forever around my neck.

As for the other three (2,3,10), they all fall under proper clothing as far as I can tell.

Oh and a compass with a mirror, to be really specific, might be something to add to the list. Good for more than just shaving.

Lol, interesting & back to the top:

1. Map <s>and compass</s>, and the knowledge of how to use<s> both</s> one
2. <s>Sun protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses,</s> brimmed hat
3. <s>Rain gear and</s> extra clothing
4. <s>Head lamp/flashlight with extra batteries and bulb</s>
5. First aid kit/supplies
6. Pocket knife or Multi-Tool
7. Extra Food (in addition to your lunch/planned meals)
8. <s>Extra water and means of </s> water treatment
9. Fire starter (for emergency use)
10. <s>Emergency shelter (tarp, poncho, tube tent)</s>Tent

Maybe I live on the edge, when out away from civilization Except for extra socks and decent boots A good knife and some rope.

Finally, a good attitude and gone for a month
