Default Mount Lougheed

2014-07-26

We attempted this one the weekend before, only to be turned around by a surprisingly cold wind and heavy rain. This time, with a slightly different group, we were treated to a pretty nice day and awesome views from the summit.

The route is a surprisingly easy scramble, just a scree bash really. Cairns mark spots that may not be too obvious. One of my friends was not too comfortable on the scree and had some issues with his boots, so it took us quite a while. We saw numerous groups, including some later in the day that seemed to be planning to spend the night.

I remember there's one section just above the big scree cone that you want to traverse climber's right to aim for easier terrain. I somehow missed that and went straight up. Did it with fresh snow and verglass and felt a bit dicey on a couple places. On descent I used the easiest line and didn't encounter problem.

Steven, I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot more cairns now vs two years ago. I didn't think this was that popular of a route, but we saw quite a few groups.

I see it's getting much more popular than it was 2 years ago. There were very few cairns when I did it, so I built a few to make routefinding easier. I couldn't understand then why so spectacular, lofty, easily attainable and conveniently located peak that grants beautiful views is neglected. It all changed over the course of 2 years. This year alone I've noticed 5 or 6 Calgary meetups' trips up Mt. Lougheed.

I think now this peak can be safely placed in the realm of easy scramble.

Yeah that mossy creek is beautiful. Sections of it are surprisingly deep.

There is a meet up group heading out there on Sunday.
