Jasper Snowbowl

I spent three days at Shangri-La last weekend. No snow around Jasper; I took these pictures a couple weeks ago at the Rocky River:

It was very warm out, we got some snow, and the only thing we didn't get was great visibility except for a couple hours early in the mornings. The ski up Jeffery Creek was in good condition. The wind had covered our track upon our return. Thanks to the next party for breaking trail, it made our exit a lot faster. While at the cabin, we spent a lot of time skiing off Sunshine and Aberhart, eating, drinking, and being merry.

Snow conditions were good at treeline and below. There was a lot of wind transport in the alpine; the north side of Little Shovel Pass was bare in places. We found easy to moderate failures (without propagation) of the storm slab on southeast slopes at 2200m but otherwise the snowpack was very well consolidated. It was over 2 metres deep half-way up Aberthart.

Not many pics, but it was a nice three days in paradise nonetheless. The only yardsale of the weekend happened on the way out Jeffery Creek, when one of our party tried to miss a collision after rounding a corner and ended up doing a four-point bridge over the open creek to avoid having an icy bath. Wish I had a picture of that...

Looks like a good amount of snow for that area.

woohoo Dav!! I get to do that same trip Mon.! Really looking forward to it...how was the new "loo"? I really hope I don't check the creek too closely!!
Did you use the winter trail or the summer trail still?

PackRat 02-02-2012 05:22 PM

Good to see some snow and now I have another place to add to my ski list!

dav1481 02-02-2012 07:43 PM

@Sodbuster Believe it or not, it was the strongest skier in our group. Definitely not me! :D

@mtnlioness Awesome, have a great trip! The winter trail is in good shape and the river crossing is safe. Check out this beauty crapper!

nice!! i've been looking at heading into that area in the near future.

How long did the approach take??

Beautiful Pics. This is a place I have yet to go...it's on the list maybe even for a day trip. Oh Mtnlioness...be glad I am not coming with you...I can see some serious shenanigans going on with the snow above the loo! [:p]

I think it took 3.5 hours for our group of 6, so it might be a bit quicker for you. The ski out from the cabin is pretty flat for a good portion of it, and I actually found it faster to keep my skins on part-way rather than double pole through punchy snow.

dav1481 02-04-2012 01:44 PM

@PackRat we should plan something there next winter.

@Vicki don't give her any ideas, she might drop that cornice on someone after too many schnapps!

mtnlioness 02-04-2012 05:27 PM

^ bahahaha I'm never living that down am I??? I am wondering what adult bevvies to carry this trip as the Sherpas aren't working out it seems! lol and Vicki ... you and I will indeed one day create some serious shenanigans some where!
Thanks for the update Dav. I'm pleased the winter trail is use-able...

just a couple of photos from our trip this week to Shangri-la...sorry Davin! We got the weather you would have loved too! https://www.clubtread.com/forumPix/341000/341339.jpg https://www.clubtread.com/forumPix/341000/341340.jpg https://www.clubtread.com/forumPix/341000/341341.jpg https://www.clubtread.com/forumPix/341000/341342.jpg https://www.clubtread.com/forumPix/341000/341343.jpg
We skiied out to below Big Shovel pass trying to see a wolverine, got to see the tracks after the sucker booted it faster up the hill than we could cover the couple of k to intercept him!
And I want you all to see that the "loo" snow pack was still in place after my schnapps evening! https://www.clubtread.com/forumPix/341000/341344.jpg https://www.clubtread.com/forumPix/341000/341345.jpg However there maybe a photo or two out there of a unique triple full moon under the full moon...now that was peach schnapps fueled shenanigans!
What a beautiful few days with weather we could hardly imagine never mind live!
Sorry Davin for the hijack!

Mmmm... thanks for posting, Cindy. Glad you got some great weather! It would have been awesome to catch a glimpse of the wolverine. I almost killed one with my car once, but that was the only time I've seen one. Glad you didn't post any incriminating photos ;)
