Default Parker Ridge

Went up to Parker Ridge on Tuesday. The weather was great (even partially blue sky, which I haven't come across much in the icefields area), albeit windy and cold at the top.

For those that haven't done this hike before, there aren't many hikes that offer such a scenic reward for so little effort (4 km total, 250 m elevation gain). The views of Saskatchewan glacier are fantastic! Up and down with photo time only takes an hour and it's definitely worth doing to break up any Banff-Jasper drive along the parkway. Probably a great hike for those without the fitness to do much hiking as well as it's quite gently switchbacked.

Mt. Athabasca and a nice shelter where we ate lunch.
Interesting clouds forming off of the icefields.
Saskatchewan glacier from the top of the ridge!

Did you sty to the right (up the ridge where the wind break is) or did you follw the trail off the left at all? When I was there last year, it was really busy on the usual trail up and to the right so we stayed off to the left and followed that trail for a while. We didn't see a soul the whole time we were over there and the views of the saskachewan are even better

nmcan84: Castleguard is the snow-covered one, right?

Mike: We actually did both sides. At first we went up towards Athabasca, ate lunch at the shelter, then went the other direction (main trail) until we had a good view of the glacier. The trail towards Athabasca is actually really wide now and in the beginning we thought it was the main trail, so there were lots of others up there too.
