From what I recall Katie is a bit older than me, in dog years LOL.. It'd take a whole bag of treats to keep me going through head high snow! What a trooper she is.

My Maya is getting a bit like that - she is 9 (possibly 10? anyway a rescue). After our hike yesterday she napped for about 6 hours solid.

I did for awhile, but it eventually worked in getting me to turn around. The pace was so slow that she was getting cold paws.

How do you know when your dog's paws are getting cold? I was watching Maya in the snow the other day, and wondering the same thing. Mind you, as she dashed into the ocean when we got home in a futile bid to play with a sea lion, I guess she wasn't cold then. She was after 15 min of swimming.

I believe Maya is a Retriever mix (?) and having such a breed before Katie, I know just how tough they are in cold conditions. She would swim at W. Rock beach in minus temperatures. Crazy.

In general, dogs are very good at hiding any pain, but Katie can give me a number of signals I keep watch for. One is those puppy-dogs eyes she is displaying above. I would bet her paws are cold in that moment, but because she is still right on my tail, I generally assume she is okay still. If she is falling behind and giving me that look, it's getting close to the point of turning around. But there are times where she will start falling behind, pausing, giving me that 'look' and lifting a paw or 2 out of the snow. It came to that point on the day of that picture. Very slow pace, and during one of my many breather-breaks, she was lifting a paw. She couldn't get warm because I was doing all the work and stopping so much. She was much happier on the way back because she had a broken trail and could lead the way at her own pace. Mostly because she hates following. : )

An attempt at Mt. Harvey on Christmas Day, but the reason we didn't make it is because I am getting older too. I can't 'throw her under the bus' this time. : )

It can't be too bad, as she is leading the way, right? We turned around shortly after...high winds and heavy sideways snowfall. About 20m shy of Mt. Harvey summit. Heavy snowfall for most of our day, but the only wind was this final ascent to the peak, so it was a very pleasant day. And yes, Katie agrees. : )

Happy New Year Katie!

Just out of curiosity -- why did you turn back 20m before summit?? I realize it was a whiteout & you wouldn't see a thing, but steepest part was already behind if you were already that close.

I think you had to be there, and with a 9 year Beagle mix to understand. I know I said "we" turned around soon after that photo was taken, but it was her that turned around and passed right by me. It wasn't the time or place to argue with her. The winds were getting stronger the higher we went and it just wasn't worth it.

We went back up today, but turned around as we hit the south ridge/old burn area. Winds were way too strong and she was looking for a tree-well to hide in. Heard a few "Is that Katie?" on our way up/down. Even a "Are you John?". Don't get that too often. : )

Bringing home 'the kill' from that Jan. 2nd trip up the Harvey trail. Never too old to beat up sticks. : )
