Default Spring Break Hikers Require Rescue on AT

Tis the season for spring break hikers. This time 4 from North Carolina got into trouble.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/...in679113.shtml

I read a fairly recently report online that the fireplace and chimney at the Derrick Bald Shelter where they were stranded was not working. But not prepared for rain or snow when there's been rain or snow in the previous week?

Stupid, stupid boys. I'm glad this story made the AP wire, so other stupid boys will pay attention.

So glad the experienced hikers happened to come by. If they hadn't, no telling what might have happened.

I'd maybe say ignorant was a better word. They probably just had no clue about being properly equipped and checking weather conditions. Probably just thought it would be a nice walk in the park.

I've thought about it, and I think they were partly stupid and partly ignorant. For example, not even thinking that you could encounter rain or snow in a 71 mile hike is stupid. Not knowing that you shouldn't wear blue jeans at high elevations in March is stupid.

But I'll bet the boy that had to be helicoptered out is gonna' feel REAL stupid when he or his parents get a bill for that rescue.
