Anyone else take a drone with them?

I recently bought myself a DJI Mavic Pro Drone, which is very compact and takes excellent photos and video. It certainly brings a whole different perspective to photography and videography. Anybody else take a drone with them on hikes or backpacks?

Nope. I'm sure you're going to get a lot of this but they're not allowed in most of the places you might want to use them and to be perfectly honest with you, I find them annoyingly loud and disruptive so I'm kind of happy about the restrictions. :)

But I do understand the appeal for photography, which is why I'm still interested in getting one myself - just not for use in the back country or areas where most people just want to enjoy peace and quiet.

There are really no legit places to fly a drone anymore, with the exception of the backcountry. These new rules went in about a month ago. Even in the backcountry there will be "animals" so not ok by the rules.

I really enjoyed flying in parks, of course away from people, but that has been taken away now as well.

Do not fly your drone:

  • higher than 90 m above the ground
  • closer than 75 m from buildings, vehicles, vessels, animals, people/crowds
  • closer than nine km from the centre of an aerodrome (any airport, heliport, seaplane base or anywhere that aircraft take-off and land)
  • within controlled or restricted airspace
  • within nine km of a forest fire
  • where it could interfere with police or first responders
  • at night or in clouds
  • if you canít keep it in sight at all times
  • if you are not within 500 m of your drone
  • if your name, address, and telephone number are not clearly marked on your drone.

Can't say that I do. But I have a funny anecdote about drones and hiking.

Coming down from a day hike to Golden Ears a few summers ago, I heard a loud whirring. I had never seen/heard a drone before and was startled by the noise until I saw the drone zipping around.

A few twists and turns of the trail later, I came across a group of 4-6 hikers in their late teens. They were huddled together close to a large tree. When they spotted me they asked nervously, "is there a horde of killer bees up ahead on the trail?" :D

IF the backcountry is within a National Park it's prohibited(thankfully):
