Essential Backcountry Emergency Gear

I think the article fails to mention:
Firestarter
Waterproof matches/lighter/Flint
Sun/rain protection
Extra water (if hiking in a place where water sources are scarce) , or if you are in an area where water is abundant, something to filter it (water filter/lifestraw)
Headlamp/Flashlight
Whistle
Bear spray/bear bangers (This is a controversial one but I always carry them)
Trip plan left with a friend (I always use https://www.adventuresmart.ca/tripplan/tripplan.php)
Other items that live in my pack that aren't 100% necessary but nice to have just in case:

Extra batteries (for GPS/headlamp etc)
Bug/mosquito spray
Gloves
Small amount of duct dape
Small amount of cash (never know?)
Small amount of paracord
