SO-CAL Slot Canyons, Granite faces
Have some work stuff to do in Arizona and Calif so took the chance to get away from our relentlessly crappy BC weather to do some hikes I've had in mind. First, the Painted Canyons of Mecca Hills in the Coachella valley near Palm Springs. Yes, there are slot canyons here and while they're not as nifty as those in Utah they're cool just the same. The local hiking club has outfitted many of the tricky parts with ladders. They're best done uphill and climb up less than 1,000' to emerge at a baking hot desert ridge where you can easily find a rattlesnake or two. These are well documented online and are about 40 minutes drive south of Palm Springs. They're fun, do them

Also took a drive up to the San Jacinto Mountains and hiked up to Suicide Peak, a 6 km trek of about 2,000' elev gain. Starts at about 5,500' ends at about 7,400'. Huge Granite rock face similar to the Chief near Squamish. Nice views, excellent day hike. Nice Oak, Jeffrey and Coulter pine forest with giant coulter pine cones
