Default South Saskatchewan Plan posted - comments needed

The Government of Alberta has just posted a draft plan of the South Saskatchewan region (basically the bottom 1/4 of Alberta) which will govern land use (and recreational opportunities) for the next while. This is a big deal, and I haven't seen any talk on this here.

Plan is here https://www.landuse.alberta.ca/LandU...2013-10-10.pdf its a huge document, but there is a map on the last page - page 157 that shows where new parks for hikers will be designated.

There is an online workbook to be filled in here https://www.landuse.alberta.ca/Pages/default.aspx

While the new parks are welcome, there are a few gaps. The Castle park is proposed to allow logging in all the valleys and there isn't a single new park proposed for all the badlands, so if you like hiking there you are out of luck.

If you care about not having recreational opportunities trashed by development, or would like to see ATV use controlled in the coming years, now is the chance to have your say.

Just an update to say if you care about hiking in Alberta you've got until January 15 to let the government know you want more trails, parks and resources for non-motorized recreation.

The motorized crowd have been coming out in force to present their perspective. Would be a real shame if we lose more country because we didn't weigh in to protect our interests.

I've sent my workbook in. My theme was to formalize, complete and protect the Great Divide trail network

Agreed. This is something we should all do as hikers in AB. Thanks for posting!

The deadline has been extended to February 28, so you still have time to comment on the need for more focus on non-motorized recreation and designated parks in Southern Alberta.

And if its any further motivation, the ATV crowd have a petition with 10,000 signatures calling for no restrictions on motorized use, anywhere in the plan -https://secure.avaaz.org/en/petition/Prevent_the_LOSS_of_recreational_land_usage_in_Sou thern_Alberta/?kKMIjeb
