Marriott Basin - Wendy Thompson Hut, April 16, 2017
Four of us out on a bit of recon mission and to enjoy some eye candy on our way to the Wendy Thompson Hut on Easter Sunday.
Road Access: The Marriott Basin FSR is 100% blocked and it will not be drivable for quite some time based on the depth of the snow accumulated and the piles from the snowplows right where it leaves Duffey Road so you park a couple hundred meters down the road across from the maintenance shed.
Gear: Since it was sub freezing we were able to hike up to the meadows area pretty much without snowshoes or traction, but I recommend you bring both as micro-spikes would have been helpful on the ascent and we used snowshoes on the decent as the sun weakened the crust... (brought crampons for more aggressive climbing past the hut which is overkill all the way to the hut).
Lots of people using the area and hardly any fresh snow so breaking trail was not required and we hustled up the hut in 2.5 hours with breaks for food and photos... then after an hour and a half lounging in the sun, eating lunch and watching the skiers climb and descend the bowls WSW of the Hut, we decided to make out way back. We were back at the car in about 1.75 hours at a lazier pace and again including photo and food breaks.
Have fun and stay safe out there!
