Default Three Peaks: Windy Knob, Baldy, and Church: Jul.04/15

This trip happened just hours after the offer was made, and accepted. Wally had been rambling through the area accessed by the Lumchen FSR, and invited me to take a walk through the area. I in turn invited Janice.

So three of us met by her house at 7:30 am; and we were off. Enroute to Cultus Lake, and then take a road past and left beyond the water park. then a few more turns, onto gravel, and then take a right fork of the three presented.... and then up a dusty bumpy gravel road, with lots of large stones protuding up the road surface -further up the mountain.

It is a long and windy road, and finally we reached a large parking lot (which we previously had walked up to years ago).
...history in this report (almost 8 years ago)...
https://forums.clubtread.com/27-briti...ch-sunday.html

Seems like the years had gone by rather quickly, did not think it was that long ago..... times had really changed since then:

Janice and I set out up a road bed .. and then up to the forest trail which entered the forest to the right. There is a small transmitter station up there as well, looks like a replacement for the previous model that existed there previously.

The pictures:

Meadow on Windy Knob:

View towards Twin Sisters south of the border:

This is an important tree with small name tag on: left up goes Baldy and Church Mountain, and right lower goes to Lumchen Lake.

Interesting trees to walk through and hug:

View North as we ascend Baldy

Survey Marker on Baldy

View West over Lumchen Lake, Isar far to west

Church Mountain

Mount Baker Saturday morning, air was still clean and clear... no smoke.

Meadow below (east) of Baldy, walking towards Church Mountain summit area.

Pond on east high part of Church Mountain, drying out. And there be Lupine flowers too

Secondary peak of Church Mtn, view southeast

Windy Knob viewed from Baldy Mountain.

Flowers & Dead Trees on Windy Knob.

Mt. Baldy as viewed from Windy Knob.

Meadow area on high part of Windy Knob. there be lots of small flowers

Ridge north from Windy Knob

Road leading back down to parking lot

Trip total - 10.5 km with net elevation gain for all aspects of 700 meters.
Generally very easy trails with wonderful views, we made one mistake in taking a short cut up Mt. Baldy from the east side, off trail. Got up to 100% slope with slippery brush and blueberries, assorted bushwacking and a little slick on the very small stemy bushes. It was an arduous 200 meter elevation gain in the heat... glad to make it to the top on level ground and have a swig of a cool drink.

Best stick to trails and avoid the veggy scrambling, rock scrambling is easier and more fun.

Thanks Wally for taking us and Karl for the invite! I enjoyed this hike very much, an area I'd been wanting to get into and explore for awhile. Kind of funny how we summited Old Baldy twice as I was all psyched up for a swim in Liumchen Lake... oh well. lol. Looking forward to going back into this area and crossing off Liumchen Lake and Peak.

Pic #2 International Ridge, #3 Church Mtn., #4 Old Baldy, #5 Church Mtn., #7 Mt. Shuksan (Wa). and HAN PEAK to the right which Karl and I had summited a few days before on Canada Day, #10 look closely and you should see Karl - steep steep!, #11 ripped up hiking legs lol, #16 Windy Knob, #17 Church and Old Baldy, #18 abandoned ATV we came across on the drive down... strange.

Thanks again Wally and Karl! and for the door to door pick up and drop off.

Glad you both liked the trip and you are both welcome.
I had other unfinished business to take care of so did not join you two.

Every one knows this one.

Did not think crossing over to meet the Liumchen Lake fork at Meet Trail would be so tough from Church Mountain and it appears in the picture Janice took below that going lower down just above the rock slid or getting to those trees on the right may have been the way to go.
But I was not there and Karl said you were both driver back and your only route was straight up Baldy. What looks good on the maps and google earth is not always the way it is. Have to be there to know.

Here's your next destination and it's lake.
Liumchen Mountain.

Zoom shoots when they were on Old Baldy from south slope of Windy Knob.

Never did see any one walking back down the road so it seems that quad was completely abandoned for the time being.

Pictures do not look as good as they should because I had to shrink them way down before they would upload.
Don't know why there is a size limit. The server software should shrink them automatically when uploaded.
Also don't like the fact that in edit mode can not delete any picture or file uploads at least I could not figure out how to do it.
I made a text file with the video link in it because at first the video link would not work.
Now to get rid of that text file I have to delete the whole post and start all over, that is what I had to do to change pictures so I guess I would have to do the same thing to get rid of that text file.

Here's a video for that day.
