Default Hiker found after surviving month in snow, frozen mountain

Thursday, August 25, 2016, 12:33 PM - A hiker that went missing approximately one month ago has been found alive in a snowed-in hut stationed in New Zealand's mountains.
The woman, an unnamed Czech tourist, withstood a grisly several weeks in the frozen mountains of Australasia after her partner fell to his death, police told The Associated Press (AP).

Wow, if there ever was an argument for leaving a trip plan with someone ...

yup, that and carrying a Personal Locator beacon or similar signalling device. Perhaps, even carrying a few signal flares and pen flare gun.

Tragic outcome

Odd circumstances.

This is a bit weird. I was through there a couple of months ago, the day before they removed the bridges for winter. The whole story is a bit weird, like they were in there for 4 days BEFORE the accident - it's an overnight / 3 day through hike. It's also not a challenging route, hard to imagine where he could have found a slope to fall to his death on. The hut she was staying in is under a day from the highway- although obviously snow complicates that a little. Those huts have radios as well. Obviously a lot of questions. Be interesting to know where he fell. Must have been a freak accident.
They probably shouldn't have been there in the first place - it's an avalanche deathtrap at that time of year and this is well advertised online and on the track itself.
I suppose "if in doubt, stay put" is a good call in most circumstances.
Probably added a lot more time to the hike for that couple because they were so unprepared/inexperienced, and there was a lot of snow.

Amazing story, and thankfully with a good ending. Sad about the loss of her partner though.

Hiking is what keeps you young of mind and heart. When the going gets tough, the tough get going..............

Time of the year is the key. I've been on Routeburn track. In season (late Oct - early April) it is straightforward, with several huts spaced on half-day distances:

But it is high-alpine terrain & August is end of winter / early spring. Stops being hiking and becomes mountaineering. You can go to Garibaldi / Panorama / Gentian / Helm in summer with shorts and hands in your pockets. Of you can go in February and risk blizzard, whiteouts, avalanches etc. Simply not the season.

FYI, Adventuresmart has made it ridiculously simple to leave a trip plan with multiple people:
