Patching up a Down Jacket.

Hi People.

Anyone have suggestions for patching up a very small hole in a down jacket? It's an MEC jacket - the polyester exterior layer is very thin. Is an iron on patch ok? Or will that damage the material? What about some kind of glue?

I'm sure there are various expensive 'patch kits' that can be purchased at a speciality outdoors store. I'm just looking for something simple and effective. And no, I've thought about duct tape already.

Thanks,
Carm

Iron may melt the jacket...try the sticky patch then seam seal it

Duct tape works but leaves a residue if you plan to remove it

You can always use a felt marker to color match the duct tape to your jacket [:p] It works well.

Hey Carm!
One year I got too close to a candle lantern and holed the back of my down vest. I had a stuff sac that was the same colour, so I cut off a piece of material from the 'lid' of the stuff sac large enough to cover the hole and spread some McNett Seam Grip to the 'underside of the patch. I placed the patch on the vest, covering the hole and sprinkled a little baby powder over the patch area. I then put a layer of plastic over that and placed a couple of heavy books on top to apply the pressure for patching and let dry. Has been there keeping the down in for the past 13 years.

I've had a duct tape patch on my down jacket for about 4 years now. It was originally a field repair, but it worked so well that I never bothered to improve it.

Duct tape! Only way to go. My parka is over 30 years old and still going strong because of a little of the good stuff. :-)

Canadian Tire sells packages of ripstop nylon tape. I used it for a down sleeping bag fast repair and it has been holding even after several stuffings in the stuff sack. Could give it a try! It is very cheap and comes in a few different colors!

MEC also sells these types of self adhesive patches.
Last time I checked they had both ripstop nylon as well as gortex patches in multipole colours.
I've used them successfully on both tents & jackets.
